The Missed Spots You’re Probably Not Cleaning (But Should)

Easy forgotten areas that make a big difference in how your home feels.

Between school drop-offs, meals, laundry, and the daily chaos of family life, it’s no wonder certain spots get overlooked. These are the quick, forgotten places that make a surprisingly big difference when they’re clean. And they take almost no time at all (my favorite kind of win!).

These aren’t deep-cleaning tasks. Think tiny resets you can knock out in just a few minutes.

These are perfect tasks to sprinkle into a nightly reset, weekly refresh, or when you just want a quick win without a full clean.

Why These Small Spots Matter

These small areas collect more germs than we think.

You know that moment when you finally notice the light switch smudges or the crumbs stuck in the silverware tray? Once you see it, you can’t unsee it, but it only takes a few minutes to fix. Cleaning these overlooked areas helps high-traffic spaces feel fresher, and they’re perfect quick wins for busy moms who don’t have a lot of time.

Short on Time? Start With These 5

If you don’t want to tackle the full list, start with light switches, door handles, remote controls, toothbrush holders, and computer keyboards. These take just a few minutes and make the biggest difference fast – especially because they can help keep everyone healthy!

Light Switches & Door Handles

Some of the germiest spots in the house.

Kids touch them constantly, so they’re germ magnets. A quick clean with a damp cloth or sanitizing wipe is all you need. It takes less than 30 seconds and instantly makes the room feel cleaner.

Top of the Fridge

No one sees it…until they do.

One morning as I was coming down the stairs, I caught a glimpse of the top of my fridge – horrified doesn’t cover it. This area collects dust and kitchen grease fast. A simple wipe every few weeks makes the whole kitchen feel cleaner.

Crumb Tray in the Toaster

Every mom forgets this… until it smells a little too “toasty”.

Pull out the tray, dump the crumbs, and give it a quick wipe. It usually takes under a minute unless there’s burnt butter stuck on there – then it may take a little extra scrubbing. Still oddly satisfying.

Under the Bathroom Sink

The hidden catch-all.

These spaces collect products, dust, and hair (you know it’s true). A quick clean of this area every so often takes about five minutes. Toss expired products, wipe the shelf, and tidy the space.

Silverware Organizer

Crumbs always find a way in.

In my case, it collects both crumbs and flour from baking. Remove the silverware, dump the tray, and wipe it down. It’s a spot guests will never see, but it instantly makes your kitchen feel cleaner.

Dishwasher Filter

The shock factor is real.

Did you know your dishwasher has a filter? I didn’t realize how much this mattered until I cleaned mine for the first time. Twist out the filter, rinse it under warm water, and wipe the inside area. It helps your dishwasher clean and smell better.

Washing Machine

Yes, it needs a quick clean.

If your machine has ever had that “mystery smell”, you’re not alone. Both top loaders and front loaders can get funky fast. Use the cleaning cycle with a little bleach (check your manual first), then wipe the drum. Keeping the door cracked after washing clothes often helps prevent smells.

Behind the Faucets

Every sink… every time.

A quick wipe behind the faucet base makes a huge difference. Some of those areas are hard to reach so they’re often neglected. Use a toothbrush for tight spots. You’ll be shocked at how much cleaner the whole sink looks.

Remote Controls

Germ collectors nobody thinks about.

Kids touch them constantly. A quick clean with a disinfecting wipe helps keep the germs down and the family healthier. This is especially helpful during cold and flu season.

Trash Cans

Way more than just trash inside.

Crumbs, spills, and mystery stickiness always find their way inside. Wipe the rim and interior, then rinse and dry the whole can once in a while. Don’t forget the recycling bin – it needs love too!

Toothbrush Holders

Sneaky gross.

They look fine outside but can get so gross inside. Empty, rinse, scrub. If you use a cup-style holder, run it through the dishwasher every now and then.

Computer Keyboard

Especially if kids use it.

Flip it upside down to shake out crumbs, then wipe the keys. Compressed air is a bonus if you have it. This makes shared spaces feel cleaner, especially if kids use it for schoolwork.

Under Furniture

Dust bunnies, lone socks, and everything your kids “accidentally” kicked under there.

A few minutes under the couch can make the whole room feel cleaner. I recently pulled out our furniture and could have knit a sweater with the dog hair I found. A quick sweep or vacuum works wonders.

Stove Hood Vent

Grease city.

Pop off the vent cover and soak it in hot soapy water. Wipe the underside of the hood. It doesn’t need to be spotless, just freshened up.

Doors and Door Frames

Kids fingerprints everywhere.

This takes seconds and instantly brightens a room. Wipe around the door handles, lower half of the door (kid height), and the frame where dust collects.

Ceiling Fans

These get ugly fast.

Slip a pillowcase over each blade and wipe. It traps the dust inside. A quick clean every so often keeps the room fresher.

Front of Cabinets

Especially the kid-height ones.

This is now one of my weekly checklist items. Wipe around knobs and edges where drips and fingerprints collect. Instant satisfaction. My husband even notices when I’ve cleaned the cabinets.

Bonus: Baseboards

Just a quick swipe.

A microfiber cloth or vacuum brush is all you need. Not a full scrub – just a quick refresh that makes rooms feel cleaner.

Mom Tip: Air Your House Out

Simple and surprisingly effective.

On nice days, open a few windows for 5-10 minutes. Fresh air resets the feel of your entire home.

How to Get Started

If keeping up with cleaning feels hard, a simple nightly reset can help these small tasks stay manageable.

Choose two of these forgotten spots tonight. You’ll notice the difference right away. And pin this list for the next time you need a quick win around the house!
